2026 Mix 37: Losin’ Texas, pop formalists on the rise, Waterboys appreciation, expected winners from xiangyu and Stay True Sounds, and an unexpected (and very weird) winner from Sara Bereilles
Indian pop continues to elude me -- mainly think it's a sourcing problem (would probably find a lot more and more reliably on YouTube than on streaming) but this has not stopped me from developing a crackpot theory of India and China suffering from their own micro-A-pop phenomena
I've heard very little from India that doesn't sound made-to-order on Spotify, but the playlist in some of the places I eat when I dine out often includes a kind of autotuned bhangra with western changes that's really nice. And once a whole Indian indie-rock playlist that was state-of-the art
(I say "crackpot" because both India and China are way too big and have way too much music, most of which I have absolutely no familiarity with, to say anything about)
I seem to have heard a lot of Bollywood's best in recent years and that's what Azerbaijan sounds like here, in a good way.
